Why choose another career when you can choose Therapy as a career? Have you ever thought of what it takes to be a therapist? Have you been asking yourself things to do to achieve choosing a therapist career? Well, you haven’t thought too out of the box!!

Who is a therapist?

therapist is a licensed mental health professional who helps clients improve their lives, develop better cognitive and emotional skills, reduce symptoms of mental illness and cope with various challenges.

Therapists have many branches which can include psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage counselors, life coaches, and social workers

Can have any number of degrees in a variety of disciplines, including a master’s degree, Ph.D., MD or certificate in fields such as social work, substance abuse, clinical psychology, psychiatry or family counseling.

Help patients/clients make decisions and clarify feelings, Provide support and guidance.

Different types of therapists and how much they make

A therapist makes an average of $37.83 per hour and an average of $78,000 per year.  There are various types of therapy to start a career as a therapist. They include:

  • Cognitive Therapist: focused on identifying client problematic thought and help them to create new ones. The annual average wage of a cognitive therapist is $74,000.
  • Behaviour Therapist: behavior therapist specializes to work with a client that has mental health conditions. The median pay of $60,000 per year, why a professional in this field can earn up to $90,000.
  • Trauma work Therapist: they specialize in assisting the client with traumas or disturbing experiences such as the death of a child or loved ones. They earn an average wage of $72,000 per year.
  •  Clinical Therapist: this therapist help client to improve their mental health. The average wage of a clinical therapist per year is $74,400.
  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapist (CBT): this therapist uses the cognitive and behavioural skill in treating the negative thinking of clients who suffer from anxiety and depression. The median pay of CBT is $80,000 per year.
  • Addictive Therapist: they are trained therapists with the knowledge and clinical experience to help clients with the abuse problems. They earn an average wage of $45,000 per year.
  • Marriage and Family Therapist: they are therapists who specialize in counseling couples and family. Their median pay is $54,500 – $78,000 depending on the level of experience.

Everyone in each field of therapy requires a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a related field, and in a few cases (particularly counseling positions) that alone is enough to start practicing.

Most of these fields in Therapy career needs to also go on to earn their master’s degree in psychology or a related field, at which point they can become licensed and start practicing if they have accrued enough supervised clinical experience.

Earning a Ph.D. or Psy.D. will make prospective therapists more desirable candidates, but it is not necessary to begin practicing. You just need to enroll in any school that has Medicine as a course and other medical-related courses.
